12:00pm: Mallory Chipman & Brett Hansen

Award-winning vocalist Mallory Chipman and guitarist Brett Hansen are not only partners in music, but in life too. Having spent the past few months in isolation with their puppies, June and Cash, they’ve been passing time doing what they love most: jamming in their home; playing an eclectic mix of music ranging from beloved jazz classics to moving folk melodies to original music, all of which they’ll be sharing at the Yardbird Suite on Friday. Chipman and Hansen have performed at jazz festivals and clubs from Toronto to Budapest, have performed with artists such as PJ Perry and John Stetch, and are both esteemed music educators. Mallory Chipman & the Mystics, the experimental rock band fronted by Chipman that features Hansen on guitar, released their debut album on May 29, 2020.

1:30pm: Melafrique

Melafrique- "Melanin from Africa" is a band consisting of musicians from different parts of Africa and Canada who came together to create beautiful music.

3:00pm: Rubim DeToledo

Alberta bassist and composer, Rubim de Toledo, combines the influences of his Brazilian heritage and his dedication to the jazz tradition, to create an approach to music that is refreshing and uplifting. Boasting a diverse rhythmic palette inspired by world music, jazz, and contemporary music, a lure towards improvisation and a forward-looking traditionalism, Rubim nurtures a commanding sound and style as a bassist, soloist, and composer.

4:30pm: Audrey Ochoa

Audrey Ochoa is one of Edmonton’s most prolific trombone players, playing Jazz, Rock, Pop, Latin, Punk, Ska and whatever other genre will have her. Audrey released her debut album in 2014, “Trombone and Other Delights” which spent several consecutive months on the !Earshot! Jazz Charts, eventually earning the #5 spot on the annual top 10 for 2014. She released her second album”Afterthought” with her trio in 2017. The new album features her own compositions performed by herself and two of Edmonton’s finest, Mike Lent and Sandro Dominelli. Lending his mixing talents to the trio will Battery Poacher (Dallas Budd), who will be adding the sounds of psychadelia, hip hop and house to this otherwise bare bones trio of Bass, Drums and Trombone.

Jazz Around Town starts Thursday August 19 and runs until Sunday August 22 in a variety of venues across Edmonton.
